Stay motivated in self-isolation with these DIY garage projects

With COVID-19 restricting our movements, it’s easy to feel like life is on hold, waiting to get going again. However, just because we can’t go outside, doesn’t mean there aren’t a range of boredom-busting DIY projects to keep you feeling connected, motivated and sanitised as we remain socially distant in the weeks and months ahead.

Here are three DIY projects that you can get started this weekend, and they can all take place in the garage!

Create a fun family studio to stay connected

If FaceTime calls give you palpitations as you look for a tidy corner in the house to stand in front of, or you’re sick of crowding around a single phone trying to catch up with everyone – it could be time to go pro with your own isolation video studio in the garage.

Apps like FaceTime, Zoom and House Party allow us to stay connected and have serious fun with friends and family – from games nights to dinners and even dance parties.

To create your own video studio, simply set up a projector and use the garage wall as your screen! Add some speakers, a rug and bean bags and before you know it, you’ll feel like your family and mates have called around just like old times.

When you’re not virtually-connecting with loved ones, you’ll be able to use the projector to watch television or movies – almost making you feel like you’re at the cinema. All that’s missing now is the popcorn!

Convert the garage into your hobby room

Having a hobby is a great way to spend spare time and unwind from our daily routines. Similarly, these activities can improve our mental health and wellbeing, while reducing stress.

To convert your garage into a breakout space, you’ll need to first undertake a thorough clean of the space and remove any grease stains or hazardous items which may detract from the overall appeal or safety of your breakout zone.

Next, create atmosphere and a sense of ambiance in the space by adding comfortable furniture, décor, and even an air purifier or candle which will help to make time spent practising your hobby more enjoyable.

By installing a storage space in the garage, you’ll be able to ensure that you have all the necessary hobby materials on hand.

Whether it’s art, yoga or meditation, learning how to DJ, learning a new language or home improvement, your hobby space will help you to destress and build on your skills!

Create a sanitisation station in the garage

Still waiting for the hand sanitiser to restock at your local supermarket?

A quick project that will help the whole family to stay safe is to make your own hand sanitiser, which can be whipped up and stored safely in the garage.

To create your own hand sanitiser, you’ll need some alcohol. The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention advise that hand sanitiser must be at least 60 per cent alcohol to be effective at killing germs. You can find isopropyl alcohol at suppliers such as Bunnings.

For this hand sanitiser recipe, you’ll need some isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel; with a ratio of 3:1 respectively. Adding a few drops of tea tree or eucalyptus oil will help to give the sanitiser a refreshing smell.

The World Health Organisation recommends letting your sanitiser solution sit for at least 72 hours before being used. During this time, the sanitiser will kill any bacteria that may have contaminated the mixing process. Be sure to store any excess isopropyl alcohol safely when you’re finished.

Although we may not have a COVID-19 cure, there are plenty of boredom busting DIY garage projects to help you stay connected, motivated and sanitised during this unusual period. Thinking outside the box – or in this case, the ordinary use of your garage – will help you to make the most of the time you spend at home!
